“Naam mein kya rakha hai” means “what is in the name”, this statement of world-famous novelist William Shakespeare suddenly came to mind when it came to know that Rahul Gandhi’s membership of Parliament has been cancelled. Actually, it happened that a decision from a CJM court in Surat shocked everyone when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years in a defamation case.
The matter is of the last election season. All parties were holding campaign rallies across the country for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, while addressing a public meeting in Kolar, Tamil Nadu, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a statement, “Why is Modi the surname of all thieves?”. And further, some names likewise, Lalit Modi, Nirav Modi and Narendra Modi mentioned. What was it then Gujarat’s BJP leader Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case in the local court saying that Rahul Gandhi had insulted the Modi community and the entire OBC (Other Backward Classes) society by comparing Modi and thieves.
The verdict came against Rahul Gandhi in the trial that lasted for almost two and a half years, he was sentenced to jail for 2 years, although he immediately got bail on a bond of ₹ 10,000. The interesting thing is that while working super fast, the parliamentary secretariat cancelled his membership when Rahul Gandhi’s legal team appealed against that, in the sessions court by bailing him out. Working at 5G’s pace, the Election Commission of India also announced by-elections in Wayanad, Tamil Nadu, from where Rahul Gandhi was the MP. Looking at all the events, I only found in my mind “what is in the NAME SURNAME”.
Over 5000 castes are included in all the central lists of OBCs issued by the Central Government. The list of Gujarat includes 104 main castes, 68 in Rajasthan, 76 in Uttar Pradesh, 136 in Bihar and 68 in Madhya Pradesh. In all these castes, there is no main caste mentioned by the name of Modi. The real name of BJP leader Purnesh Modi, who has claimed defamation, is not Purnesh Modi but Purnesh Bhootwala, which is revealed from his school leaving certificate. He later changed his name to Purnesh Modi. Purnesh Modi belongs to the Modhwanik community of Gujarat. As Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer Kirit Panwala also says, this means that the Modi caste of Gujarat, for which Purnesh Modi has filed a suit for insult and defamation, is not a part of the caste group at all. So, from this point of view, Purnesh Modi is not eligible to file this case because the Hon’ble Supreme Court had said that only those who are directly connected with the case could present the remedy of defamation. In this case, only Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi or any person from the Modi community can make this claim. Well, that’s not the point of discussion here.
Not only do Hindus use the surname ‘Modi’ in the country, but Muslims and Parsis also use it. Among Hindus mainly Vaishnav (Vaishya/Baniya), Kharwa, Lohan and Teli use their surname as Modi. If there is no problem, then it becomes clear that not all people with the Modi surnames come from OBC society.
According to the OBC list of Gujarat state, Muslims use Ghanchi, Modh Ghanchi, Teli, Sahu, Ganiga, Gandla, Teli Sahu, Teli Rathor etc. Modi surnames. In Gujarat and Eastern Uttar Pradesh, people of Vaishya / Bania caste who do oil business as well as oil expellers (Teli) also take the Modi surname, in Rajasthan mostly Marwari community people use the Modi surname and some OBC Teli people also use the Modi surname. use aliases. There is no mention of ‘Modi’ surname in any list of OBCs of Bihar, yet Bihar’s BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi has filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi in this episode.
The Modi surname is used in Gujarat and Rajasthan and is used by both Muslims (Ghanchi, Modh Ghanchi, Teli) and Hindus (Vaishya/Bania, Kharwa, Lohan, Ghanchi, Modh Ghanchi, Teli, Sahu, Teli Sahu, Marwari).
Nirav Modi, mentioned in the case, comes from the Vaishya community of Jamnagar, Gujarat. While Lalit Modi is originally a Marwari from Hisar and Mahendragarh areas of Haryana, who are mainly Agrawals. Lalit Modi is the grandson of business giant and industrialist Raibahadur Gurjarmal Modi, the founder of Modi Nagar near Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. And Prime Minister Narendra Modi belongs to the Ghanchi community of Gujarat. Apart from this, the Modi surname is also widely used among Parsis (Zoroastrian religion). For example, Tata Group Chairman Rusi Modi and film artist Sohrab Modi belong to the Parsi community.
So it can be understood from the whole uproar that, in fact, nothing has been kept in the surname, everything is politics. Politics between government and opposition. And the strategy can be anything, it may be silencing Rahul Gandhi in Parliament or curbing the growing popularity of Rahul Gandhi after the Bharat Jodo Yatra or destroying the opposition’s hope in the coming Lok Sabha elections or Hiding something else behind.
